Great Sand Dunes, CO: In a dry, flat valley in the shadow of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Alamosa, Colorado, the tallest sand dunes in North America rise out of nowhere and dominate the parched grasslands. In late spring and early summer, snow runoff turns the base of these scorching dunes into a landlocked beach!
Black Canyon of the Gunnison, CO: Located near Montrose, Colorado, the Black Canyon is an imposing, breathtaking wonder. The Gunnison River has carved this steep, craggy marvel over a two million year period. It can get cold there, so go during the warmer months.
Mesa Verde, CO: Perhaps the country’s oldest and best preserved archaeological site, the cliff dwellings of the ancient Anasazi people are truly astounding. Tour these mysterious ruins near Durango, Colorado, that ancient Southwestern tribes inhabited as early as 600 AD and then abandoned before the arrival of Columbus.
Grand Canyon, AZ: 277 miles long and one mile deep, the unbelievable, winding caverns of the Grand Canyon will leave you speechless. Hike around its countless paths, ride mules to the bottom, or raft the raging Colorado River that carved the canyon into the red earth around Flagstaff, Arizona.
Yellowstone, WY: Founded in 1872, America’s first National Park remains one of its most popular and iconic. It contains the majority of the world’s geysers, including the one and only Old Faithful, and houses flora and fauna in a large and remarkably intact temperate ecosystem.
Any one of these stunning parks can give you and your family the road trip of a life time! The drive there will be pretty too. Also, don’t forget about Colorado’s beloved Rocky Mountain National Park or any of Utah’s wonderful national parks that we mentioned in previous posts. Happy road tripping!
