For a while, having a GPS was an extravagance, bought only by those who spent large amounts of time on the road. But now, technology has managed to bring Global Positioning technology into the palm of your hand with smart phones and by directly integrating it into vehicles. GPS is one of the greatest vehicle enhancements to reach the hands of consumers and has made the journey from point A to point B a whole lot less confusing for everyone. But navigation isn’t all they can do.
- Location Identification: Unlike the old days where you would draw a circle around where you thought you were on a map, GPS tells you the exact coordinates of where your vehicle is located. This means if you run out of gas or need a tow truck or the police to come help, they will have a much easier time finding you. And in situations such as these, time is of the essence.
- Measuring Speed: Having a good GPS will help you avoid speeding by providing you with warnings when you exceed the speed limit. Not to mention being able to prove how fast you were going when the cops stop you (an argument which we don’t always recommend). Either way, it’s bound to help you save on speeding tickets.
- Saving memories: Yet another tool in your arsenal to help you avoid losing track of things, GPS are amazing for remembering where to go. This includes saving your favorite backroad hiking spots, marking where one of your best photos is from, and setting waypoints on your journey that you don’t want to miss.
All in all, it’s become hard to imagine a world not equipped with GPS. We have become so accustomed to using them, that the idea of getting truly lost is now foreign to us. While GPS is an incredible tool, we would also like to encourage you to turn them off every now and then (preferably not in a city) and see where your wheels will take you. No matter where that is, drive safe and have fun!
