Keyless Ignition
Just how it sounds, vehicles with keyless ignition transform turning your key into pushing a button. Per the vehicle website Edmunds.com, there are currently 245 models of vehicle which come standard with keyless ignition. So is this the wave of the future? Not necessarily. Safety concerns have been popping up since the technology appeared which concern the risks of forgetting to turn your car off.
Here’s the problem: with a key, you have to remove the key from the ignition to turn off your vehicle. With a push button, it takes away that relationship and makes forgetting to turn your car off a very real possibility. If the car is left on, it will continue to chug through fuel until it runs out, filling your garage with carbon monoxide, which could seep into your home. Carbon monoxide is poisonous and in large enough quantities can kill you. Multiple law suits have been filed to date for the faulty design and proposals are in the works for an auto-shutoff update.
Keyless Entry
Though not a new concept, keyless entry is a premium feature which has taken hold in the luxury car market. After entering a unique code, you will be able to access your vehicle without your key with just a few number punches. But even more efficient is the remote which is coming standard on most new keys, allowing you to unlock your car from up to 100 feet away. If you’ve got an older vehicle, there are plenty of remotes on the market capable of integrating with your vehicle. Consider the investment if you are looking to step into a world of convenience.
Luckily, most modern vehicles are integrating keyless entry and the pressure is on for manufacturers to install safety backups for keyless ignition. Keep an eye out when you are shopping for your next vehicle and try to make sure this new hot technology is included.
